New year’s resolutions always seem to fail and I think the main reason for this is that they are too broad…
For example, ‘I am going to get healthy’ is a statement that is too broad but ‘complete the couch to 5k by March’ is a SMART target – it is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.
So, with the SMART target mentality, here are my SMART New Year’s Resolutions for 2020…
Penny a Day Challenge
Every year I see this one floating around social media and in 2020 I want to give it ago because it is all laid out for you and it is a regime that I can stick to… so this is the penny per day challenge:
Day 1: 1p
Day 2: 2p
Day 3: 3p
Carry on like this and on day 109 you will put £1.09 in the pot.
By December 31st 2020 you should have (by my calculations): £671.61
I will keep you updated on social media and my monthly favourites on how it is going – let me know if you decided to take on the penny a day challenge in 2020.
Race for Life 5K
As part of my 30 before 30 I said I wanted to complete the Race for Life 5K every year until I’m 30, so this will be a staple in my new year’s resolutions each year. I will keep you updated on sponsorship and how I am preparing for it as the time draws nearer.
Here’s a picture of me and my auntie from the race in 2016!

Pass my Driving Test
My theory runs out in July 2020 so watch this space!
Read 5 books from my 100 Novels Checklist
Earlier this year I published a 100 Novels Checklist alongside by 30 before 30 – and this year I would like to read a minimum of 5 books from this list and these are the books that I have chosen for 2020:
- The Bell Jar – Slyvia Plath
- Noughts & Crosses – Malorie Blackman
- The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie – Muriel Spark
- The Hound of the Baskervilles – Arthur Conan Doyle
- How to be Both – Ali Smith
I have chosen the books from different genres and I will update the original checklist as I go through them.
In my Organisation, Productivity & Me post I wrote about having an evening routine and how I want to stick to this to help with my sleep and while I did stick to this for a short amount of time I have let it fail so I would like to pick this back up again… but make it more specific.
This will be my routine on work nights: Sunday, Monday Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
- Remove make-up, shower, and all those other hygiene bits
- Face mask or some other pamper thing (to treat myself once or twice a week!)
- Pick out my outfit for the next day
- Pack my bag for the next day
- Set my alarm(s) – I love a good snooze
- Put my phone down/ switch my laptop off!!!!
- Grab a book and read for an hour or so
- Lights out
And to make sure I stick to it I will be adding another point to this list : ‘write in my journal’…
Keep a daily journal in 2020
Another goal of my 30 before 30 is to write in a journal everyday for 365 days and I would like to start this in 2020 and make sure I write in it every day – and write about everything even the most menial of things like what I had for dinner that day…
I don’t know how this journal will look yet, it may be the old fashioned way or it may be electronic.
So, I think those are some SMART targets – they are specific, measurable, achievable and timely.
Let me know what your resolutions are in the comments below and I will keep you updated on mine!
Happy New Year,
Love, Georgina x
